If you’ve been around for a while, you probably know that last year, I became an auntie to the sweetest baby girl EVER! Sweet London made her appearance in late July, but before she did, my sister was sure to photograph some really special maternity sessions. This is actually part one of TWO maternity sessions that you’ll see (stay tuned for Part 2 coming really soon!) and focused more on individual portraiture of my sister, Meg, and her baby bump!
While this studio-inspired maternity photoshoot turned out absolutely stunning, you may be surprised to hear that it was photographed in the most unexpected of spaces— the back alley of Meg’s house!
From the start of our session planning, Meg had a clear vision in mind.
She hoped to create one concept with a casual, laid back and slightly sensual feel with florals incorporated… while she also hoped to create something elegant and sleek with high contrast and more of a serious feel. To make this happen, we used a white backdrop and focused on creating a bit more of a clean studio vibe for both concepts.
I can only imagine what we looked like to anyone that caught a glimpse of our “studio.”
I knew that all I needed to make these photos shine was a little bit of space, some clean light, and a plain white backdrop. With the backdrop already in storage in my basement, I also knew that I could find the gorgeous light I was hoping to see in these photos in my sister’s back alley… so you better bet I carried my backdrop stand and backdrop down our street and over to her house to create a makeshift studio in the back alley.
With a nearly 8-month pregnant woman and a flimsy backdrop and some light wind, you can only imagine that there were a lot of giggles. That said, even if our setup was a bit homemade, I am absolutely in love with how the photos turned out.
Meg’s studio-inspired maternity photos not only captured my sister’s radiance but also the love and excitement she held for her growing family.
Now, 6+ months later, I have a hard time believing our sweet, giggly London was growing in her bump. I am SO grateful for these photos… and for the hilarious memories that we made while creating them.
Part two of Meg’s maternity photos will be coming to the blog SOON! The second part of the session included her husband, Sean, and their dog, Luna. Set against the backdrop of the beach at sunset, this session was also equally stunning!
But for now, it’s time to scroll through part one of Meg’s studio-inspired maternity photos! I can’t wait for you to see how both of her visions came together in such unique and beautiful ways!
